From the Back Cover The growth of the livestock and poultry in the United States has generated a need for improved methods of manure management that are environmentally safe, reliable, and cost-effective. Managing Livestock Wastes to Preserve Environmental Quality focuses on planning and designing animal manure management systems with a main goal of preventing surface and groundwater contamination as well as air pollution and public complaints about odors, dust, and gases (ammonia, methane) emanating from manure storages.

This book outlines systems and strategies for adequate manure storage and treatment, including dead animal management. It also addresses land conservation efforts and the risks of manure losses through erosion and runoff; manure management based on crop nutrient balances and methods of manure application; and technologies for producing low-odor manure through anaerobic digestion and dietary management. Other uses of manure, such as composting and biogas harvesting, when land application is limited are presented.
