From School Library Journal Grade 6-10-Moehn states that social anxiety appears to result from a combination of biochemical, genetic, and environmental factors. Its onset is common during adolescence. She describes two main forms of the condition-generalized anxiety, which occurs in many settings, and specific anxiety, which is limited to certain tasks or events. Through case examples, she examines the effects of this condition on various aspects of life, including school, work, and relationships. The techniques she outlines for managing social anxiety include journal writing, goal setting, physical exercise, and relaxation and visualization. While optimistic about self-help, Moehn provides information on professional therapies and alerts readers to danger signs that call for immediate intervention. This well-written book is an accessible tool for investigating an often murky subject, and the calm and supportive style also makes it appropriate for self-help.

From Gr. 7-12. Noting that it's perfectly normal to feel nervous or uncomfortable in social situations from time to time, Moehn clarifies behaviors and suggests strategies for individuals who find their anxiety isolating or overwhelming. Her text is accessible, balancing psychological jargon with short case studies that make the content easier to grasp. The strength of the book is Moehn's clear, thoughtful presentation of coping skills, activities such as journal writing, goal setting, muscle relaxation, visualization, and more. A final chapter looks at professional help by defining types of therapists, therapeutic methods, and medications. One caveat: a questionnaire entitled "Brief Social Phobia Scale" may cause some anxiety of its own; it asks students to score their responses to social situations, but doesn't offer a range for normal scores. The brief but thorough chapters in combination with a glossary, a directory, and an index make this an easily digestible self-help book that can guide teens through difficult situations. Randy Meyer
